Position Summary:
The Ophthalmic Assistant is an unlicensed health professional who maintains department patient care supplies, ensures timely flow of patients, and assists physicians and nurses with patient screening, diagnostic testing, exams and in-office procedures. Demonstrates strong customer service skills and compassion and caring in dealing with others. The Certified Medical Assistant / Registered Medical Assistant performs routine administrative and patient care support duties in a medical practice to assist medical and/or nursing staff in the examination and treatment of patients and ensures that the office runs smoothly.
Qualifications:
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS H.S. Diploma/GED CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS Certified Management Accountant (CMA) From the following certification bodies: National Health Career Association (NHA), National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP), American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) or American Allied Health (AAH) upon hire or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) From the following certification bodies: American Medical Technologists (AMT) or the American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA) upon hire. Medical Terminology
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE Capacity to learn and retain information regarding patient care procedures. Strong customer service skills; self motivated and positive attitude.
Essential Functions:
Completes initial patient screening. Documents pertinent patient information in EMR.
Performs ophthalmic diagnostic testing and related tasks/duties using applicable equipment and methodology.
Assists physicians and/or nursing staff with various procedures using appropriate techniques.
Assists nurses with patient communication through the EMR worklist.
Maintains patient care environment and supplies to ensure patient privacy and safety.
Gathers medical records and patient information
Performs Visual acuity screening
Performs Ophthalmic preliminary and diagnostic tests
Prepares medication for in-office administration
Assists with in-office procedures
Processes prescriptions and testing orders following department protocols
Maintains and cleans ophthalmic instruments
Instills eye drops
Assist with patient scheduling
Assist with training of other Ophthalmic Assistants and/or CMAs
Is a Certified Medical Assistant
